Day in Lucca

Monday 30th April

Had to get up early today as we were catching a train to Lucca for the day.  The bus down to Montecatini Terme runs very infrequently, so it meant quite a long wait at the station in both directions, but was another great day out.  Lucca has huge brick 16C ramparts built around the city with a wide path lined with trees - very pleasant to walk around so long you avoid the hundreds of cyclists!  We ate our picnic up there looking down into this pretty garden.

I've been walking a lot easier today, so we wandered among the little streets, seeing decorated churches and lots more towers.

The Torre Guinigi is unique in that it has oak trees sprouting out on top!

There was a Roman amphitheatre, but years ago it was mined for building stone, but the perfect oval shape was used as a base for medieval houses, so now creates an open piazza.

This is our set-up here at the camping showing the ensuite bathrooms - 4 to a pod - John is busy tidying the van garage!
